We spoke to transgender activist and actress Laxmi Narayan Tripathi about this and she said, “Marriage is about the union of two souls, not two genders. We respect the judiciary and accept their decision, but I feel the government has brought many progressive changes in the past and it should consider same sex marriage, too. It is important to wait for the Supreme Court‘s verdict on this.”
Stressing on the fact that that Section 377 has been decriminalised, she added, “After Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was decriminalised, the Supreme Court recognised transgender rights, officially making them the third gender. It is important that if two individuals love each other, they should be given the permission to marry and live a happy life.”
Laxmi has appeared on The Kapil Sharma Show, participated in Bigg Boss 5 (2011), Sach Ka Samna with Rajeev Khandelwal, 10 Ka Dum with Salman Khan and Raaz Pichle Janam Ka. She has a postgraduate degree in Bharatnatyam. Tripathi has done a lot of interesting work for the transgender community. In 2008, She was the first transgender to represent Asia Pacific in the UN. At the assembly, she spoke about the transgender community. She had said how people should treat the transgender community individuals as humans. Her efforts helped the first transgender team to scale a Himalayan peak (Friendship peak) in 2020.
