Dennis Joseph’s last outing was ‘Geethanjali’ released in 2013. He crafted the dialogues for the Priyadarshan movie and wasn’t active in the industry for the past few years. The scenarist’s upcoming film was supposed to be ‘Power Star’, which will be helmed by Omar Lulu. The duo announced their collaboration last year, during the onset of the pandemic and the scripting was underway. In an exclusive conversation with ETimes, director Omar Lulu spoke about the late Dennis Joseph, the last conversation they had, and also opened up about ‘Power Star’, starring Babu Antony.
Like many others in the industry, Omar Lulu too is shocked and devastated knowing the untimely demise of Dennis Joseph. Unable to come to terms with the demise of the legendary scenarist, the director expressed, “We spoke recently. Dennis Joseph sir had completed the script of ‘Power Star’ and we had a chat two days ago. He shared that the script was completed and asked me to come to visit him, once the lockdown ends. He had high hopes about our film, as he was also working after a while. ‘Power Star’ is a mass entertainer. And he was someone who adores such mass commercial movies.”
Omar Lulu added that he and Dennis Joseph were planning to work on the final draft of the film once the lockdown was lifted. And also expressed that working with the legend was a dream, “I grew up watching Dennis sir’s films. I remember watching ‘Manu Uncle’. And then there were his big blockbusters like ‘Rajavinte Makan’, and ‘New Delhi’. I haven’t done a mass entertainer yet and it was my biggest dream to embark on my journey with the genre through him. Pramod Pappan (filmmaker) chettan helped me to approach Dennis sir. They have worked together in ‘Thaskaraveeran’ and ‘Vajram’. So, while meeting Dennis sir, I shared a couple of my ideas, but he wasn’t positive about whether it would work with actor Babu Antony. And one day a piece of news related to drugs came in and we decided to develop a story around it. Dennis sir was very much excited and that’s how we began scripting for ‘Power Star’.”
‘Power Star’ apparently becomes the last unreleased project of Dennis Joseph and as the script is completed and only the final draft is remaining, Omar Lulu and the makers will be going ahead with the project. He also shared that the film fraternity has offered help and support in bringing out the final work of the legendary scriptwriter.
Meanwhile, Dennis Joseph has also bagged the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film for his directorial 1988 release ‘Manu Uncle’. He has delivered many gems including ‘Nirakkoottu’, ‘Kottayam Kunjachan’, ‘No. 20 Madras Mail, ‘Nair Saab’ and is the only person who owns the credit for the box office success for the hit films Mollywood has seen in the 1980s and 90s.
