She hails from Kashmir, so it shouldn’t be a surprise. However, the youngster’s entry into mainstream movies was through projects from the south. Shaylee, who debuted in films through Santhosh Sivan’s Hindi-English film Moha a few years ago, will also be seen in prominent roles in the Malayalam films Jack and Jill; and Bermuda. She tells us about the Mollywood projects, her dreams and upcoming films.
“Santhosh sir cast me in Moha after watching a short film I had directed,” reveals Shaylee, who plays a “cute and bubbly girl” in his upcoming Malayalam project Jack and Jill. “Most of my scenes are with Nedumudy Venu sir and I struggled quite a bit with Malayalam dialogues. But Nedumudy sir used to cleverly cover-up my shortcomings through his performance. I am not a trained actor, and I could learn how important it was to have a good co-star, through this experience. We shot the film in 2019 in Kochi, and working with him is something I enjoyed a lot about the project.”
In director Rajeev Kumar’s recently wrapped up film Bermuda too, Shaylee reveals, she plays a character that is a tad similar to the one in Jack and Jill. “I can’t speak much about the project yet. But, I do have great memories about it,” says Shaylee. Apparently, Rajeev happened to see her photograph on a news portal, post which he called Santhosh Sivan and inquired about her, for Bermuda. “He called me and introduced himself to me, and I found him to be very down-to-earth,” remembers Shaylee. She recalls, “I remember I told him, ‘I don’t look very south Indian,’ when he discussed the film with me. But he replied, ‘I want a different look, but who said you don’t look south Indian?’” Her first shot of the film was wearing a black salwar and bindi, remembers Shaylee. “Rajeev sir looked at me through the camera and said, ‘You look like a true-blue south Indian girl now,” she says.
The actress also has two Hindi movies coming up and what’s more, one of the films is based on a story by her! “I have directed short films in the past and love creating characters and stories. Nowadays, it’s great to see many women involved in the filmmaking and writing processes and this year, we even had a woman winning the best director award at the Oscars! I too wish to be a filmmaker someday, if all goes well. That’s my dream,” concludes Shaylee.
