Director Lijin Jose’s upcoming movie Chera, starring Nimisha Sajayan and Roshan Mathew in the lead, had its poster release recently and it has the duo’s characters sketched striking a pose that resembles Michelangelo’s renowned Pietà. Like in the statue that has the body of Jesus on the lap of Mother Mary, the poster has Roshan’s character resting on Nimisha’s.
We quizzed director Lijin on the same and he says, “All we did is to try to replicate the concept of Pieta, in the film’s poster. Pietà is about mercy and we just wanted to borrow the thought. At the same time, if you observe the poster, it will be evident that it is not the exact replica of Pietà either, we have manipulated that image. We just wanted the viewers to feel that there is a resemblance, and convey the idea of mercy. Nothing beyond that.” About the ongoing discussions and accusations on the same, the director says, “The confusions occur as people are unnecessarily reading into it. The only connection we meant is that of the theme mercy.”
He reveals that the movie is named Chera, after the Malayalam term used to refer to the Indian rat snake that is commonly found in Kerala. He explains, “In the film, Roshan’s character is a handicapped man who is affected by polio and can’t use his legs . His character’s moves resemble this snake’s. That’s why we have named the film, thus.” He hints that Nimisha’s character is the mysterious one in the story.
